JET Plant Celebrating 25 years of Planing Britain’s Roads
Leading road planing company JET Plant Hire celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.
Sean Witheford, Managing Director said: “2015 marks a significant milestone in our company’s history. We are very proud of our trading heritage, of our continued commitment to innovation within the road planing industry and of our relationships with our customers and suppliers. We are equally proud of the outstanding achievement from our dedicated colleagues - a great reflection of the passion we share for customer service, quality and professionalism."
At the recent delivery of the latest 2.1m Wirtgen planer, Wirtgen gave a small presentation to Stuart Witheford, founder of the company and father of the current Managing Director, Sean, to celebrate not only the firm’s 25th anniversary but also the 80th Wirtgen planer purchased by JET Plant.
JET Plant is very much a family-run business with Sean’s brothers Scott and Brian also involved in the company. JET Plant now employs 114 people from its two operating bases in Evesham and Newton Abbott, many of whom have worked for the firm for over 15 years.
The first contract for JET Plant was on the Isle of Wight and over the last 25 years the firm has purchased 80 road planing machines. Extremely diverse jobs have been tackled with expertise and professionalism; from planing the Clifton Suspension Bridge, which, because of the weight limit, required the lightest planers working at no less than 25m apart to remove 120 tonnes of asphalt, right through to planing 270,000 m2 of asphalt on the M48 in eight weeks.
Significant milestones over the last 25 years include the acquisition of three firms (Henson Plant Hire, Tetlaw and RW Prince Planing) and in 2010, having out-grown its office and yard in Badsey Road, the company moved into new premises in Vale Park in Evesham. The new offices, depot and workshop facility enabled the company to continue to expand and offer improved levels of customer service.
In 2014 a major £2.75m investment was made in new planers and tipper trailers, firmly establishing JET Plant as a leading company in the road planing industry with 30 planers in the fleet and setting it on a course for sustained growth and another 25 years of trading.
JET Plant acquire RW Prince road planers
Jet Plant Hire has acquired the road planing division of RW Prince, based in Yeovil, Somerset. The acquisition not only expands the JET planer fleet across the range, but also strengthens their position in the highway maintenance markets in Somerset and neighbouring counties.
Established in 2001, RW Prince is a family run business with a loyal customer base in the South West of England. Following a review of the company, owner Richard Prince decided to focus on the core aspects of his business which includes sweepers, tippers and the recycling and supply of materials. JET Plant was a natural choice to take over the road planing division and Richard Prince is reassured knowing that his long-standing customer base, for whom he has worked tirelessly over the years, will continue to be supported by a like-minded, family-run road planing business.
Sean Witheford, managing director of JET Plant commented, “we are delighted with this acquisition as the culture of RW Prince fits very well with the JET culture and we are confident that RW Prince customers will experience very little disruption through the transition period. We very much look forward to meeting and exceeding the expectations of our new customers in Somerset”.
This acquisition takes the JET road planer fleet to 25 and there is an additional two 1 meter tracked planers scheduled for delivery later this month.
Members to visit Wirtgen HQ
The APC has arranged for its members to visit the German headquarters of the Wirtgen Group, the World’s leading manufacturer of road planing machines. They will be given demonstrations of the latest innovations and technology in road planing equipment, which clients in the UK will be able to benefit from on new machines.
New Wirtgen W220 delivered
Lane Rental Services takes delivery of another brand new Wirtgen W220 road planing machine, and acquires two new specialist Nooteboom trailers to transport equipment to sites throughout the UK.
Satellite Technology Beating at the Heart of JET’s Lorries
JET's tipper fleet has been installed with WebFleet, the TomTom satellite navigation system. The technology allows real time monitoring of vehicle movements, delivering efficiencies in fleet management. Each lorry is linked to base via a unit fitted in the cab. The system allows two way communications of work instructions, including precise site and tip locations.
The system was installed primarily to give customers information on where and when lorries are tipping loads from site, with a full audit trail to support the paperwork. Real time information on turnaround time to tips is available, to ensure efficient resourcing of lorry requirements on schemes, potentially saving customers time and money.
JET Plant's Transport Manager, Stuart Wilson, who trialled the system, gives more details, "The TomTom mapping system uses Google Earth so the exact drop off point, as instructed by the customer, can be identified visually and communicated to our drivers. We can see exactly where our drivers are on Google Earth and help them find some of the more tucked away 'goat tracks' and tip locations. This really aids the time critical planing operation on our customer's sites. The driver's 'sat nav' gives them information on any traffic delays and will offer alternative routing to minimize potential downtime"
Stuart explains one of the additional, unexpected benefits, "daily reports emailed by the system give details of driving events and fuel usage for each vehicle and build a picture of an individual's driving behaviour, which can be constructively fed back to the driver to help with more fuel efficient driving, leading to a greener fleet."

The evidence of this is the safe and professional manner everyone in the company goes about their business”.

Power Plane takes off at Cambridge Airport
One of the first of the two new generation twin-engine Wirtgen W210 milling machines, bought by the UK specialist road planing contractor Power Plane Ltd, has made substantial time and cost savings on a round the clock runway resurfacing project at Cambridge Airport. The new W210 completed the job under budget and 30% ahead of programme, while saving 25% on fuel and over 30% of the contract value on the absence of backup plant, which is normally required on high profile, non-stop runway and motorway restoration projects.
